Engine oil is the single most critical maintenance input for any commercial vehicle or piece of heavy equipment. Using the wrong grade, viscosity, or specification can shorten engine life by years and void manufacturer warranties. Yet many fleet operators default to a single oil grade for everything — a costly mistake.
Understanding API and SAE Specifications
Two primary classification systems govern engine oil selection:
- SAE viscosity grades (e.g., 15W-40, 5W-30): Describe oil thickness at cold start (W = winter) and operating temperature. Modern turbodiesel engines typically require 5W-40 or 5W-30 for cold-start performance.
- API service categories (e.g., CK-4, FA-4): Specify the chemical performance level. CK-4 is the current standard for pre-2017 diesel engines; FA-4 is designed for newer, low-friction engines requiring thinner oil.
Always reference your engine manufacturer’s specification rather than using a catch-all grade for your entire fleet.
Diesel vs. Gasoline Engine Oils
Diesel engine oils and gasoline engine oils are not interchangeable. Diesel oils contain higher levels of zinc, phosphorus, and dispersants to handle the greater soot and combustion byproducts produced by diesel combustion. Using a gasoline oil in a diesel engine will cause premature wear.
Hydraulic Oils and Gear Lubricants
Beyond engine oil, commercial fleets and construction equipment require:
- Hydraulic oil: ISO VG 46 or 68 for most construction equipment; check OEM specs for newer machines with variable-speed hydraulics
- Gear oil: SAE 80W-90 or 85W-140 for manual transmissions and axles; ATF for automatic transmissions
- Grease: NLGI #2 lithium complex for most chassis and bearing applications; specialized greases for high-temperature or marine environments
Synthetic vs. Conventional Lubricants
Full synthetic lubricants offer superior performance in temperature extremes, longer drain intervals, and better fuel economy — but cost 2–3x more per volume. For most commercial fleets, a hybrid approach makes sense: synthetic where the benefit is clear (severe-duty turbo applications, cold climates) and conventional or semi-synthetic where standard service intervals are acceptable.
